Custom Bookstore Designs
Using a local bookstore as my client, I designed three objects aimed at improving the space and increasing customer satisfaction.
The first piece was a physical prototype made from laser-cut acrylic. I noticed that the staff-recommended books were often poorly organized, frequently falling off the shelves. To solve this, I designed a book stand that holds three books and includes a slot for inserting a handwritten recommendation card. The design incorporates a recurring polyhedra star motif found in the bookstore’s logo, light fixtures, and other decorative elements throughout the store, creating a cohesive visual identity.
The Loft Space
The second object addressed the store’s limited and mismatched seating. Each time I visited, the few chairs available were oddly placed and didn’t suit the layout, and the small amount of table seating was always full. I took advantage of the high ceilings to propose a loft area in a corner of the store, creating additional seating space. Underneath the loft, I added two bookshelves to form a cozy, semi-private reading nook. The loft’s railing and border also feature the same star motif to maintain visual consistency with the rest of the store’s design.
Lastly, I noticed the bookstore lacked a proper setup for guest speakers or author readings. To address this, I designed a multi-functional bookshelf display that transforms into a presentation space. In speaker mode, a central bench allows the guest to sit comfortably, flanked by shelving units on either side to hold books or materials. There is also designated space for promotional posters and featured book displays. When not in use, the bench and shelves fold up into a flat surface. The three shelves, mounted on hinges, fold together to form a standalone bookshelf that customers can browse—making the piece both practical and space-efficient.
