In my ceramics work, I explored both hand building and wheel throwing techniques, occasionally combining these methods within a single project to fully express my creative vision.
For the wave piece Equanimity, I used hand building exclusively. I started by shaping the base and carefully sculpting the back of the wave. To add strength and dimension, I constructed each section of the wave individually, layering them to create both stability and a dynamic form. Once the main structure was complete, I engraved flowing lines to capture the movement of ocean waves. Using a point tool, I added delicate textures along the brim of each wave, creating the illusion of foam and enhancing the tactile quality of the piece.
To bring Equanimity to life, I applied several shades of blue and white glaze, layering them to achieve depth and variation reminiscent of real ocean water. This combination of glazing techniques highlights the fluidity and ever-changing nature of the sea.
